Why Your Brain Was Not Built to Memorize Everything?

This was the very first blog I ever wrote. I had been looking at Blogger, Google’s blogging platform with the little orange logo, for weeks. I wanted to start writing, but I never knew what my first topic should be. Then one day, the pressure to memorise everything hit me again. It was another one of those days where I wondered why education expected us to fill our brains with facts instead of understanding them. Around 1:30 in the morning, I opened Blogger and started typing. This blog was the result. I made a few small edits in 2024 to keep it relevant, but the question that started it remains the same.
We all know how powerful the human brain is.
Yet we spend a surprising amount of time using it like a storage device.
Whenever a new laptop launches or Apple introduces a new device, people immediately begin talking about processors, memory, speed, and performance. We admire machines for what they can create, process, and solve.
Somewhere along the way, we started expecting something very different from ourselves.
Not to create.
Not to reason.
Mostly to memorise.
That never made complete sense to me.
Throughout school and even during my undergraduate years, I struggled with memorisation. Not because I didn’t want to study, but because my mind kept asking, “Why?”
I wanted to understand an idea before I remembered the answer.
Sometimes that curiosity helped me.
Many times it reflected in my grades.
As technology evolved, something interesting happened around us.
There was a time when we remembered phone numbers.
We wrote them carefully inside little address books.
Then mobile phones arrived.
Today we simply say, “Hey Siri, save this contact.”
We happily let technology remember things for us.
Because it makes sense.
If a machine can store information perfectly, why should our brains spend the same energy doing that job?
Yet much of education still measures intelligence by how well we memorise.
Who was the fifth Prime Minister of India?
Who was the tenth Mughal emperor?
How many medals did India win in the 2012 Olympics?
These facts certainly have value.
But after the examination, how many of them remain with us?
There is a quiet difference between remembering and memorising.
Remembering helps us understand.
Memorising often helps us reproduce.
One builds meaning.
The other usually ends with the examination.
If we step back for a moment, the human brain appears to be designed for something much richer.
Recognising patterns.
Connecting ideas.
Making decisions.
Imagining possibilities.
Asking better questions.
Instead of asking when Gandhi began the Dandi March, imagine asking why he chose salt.
Why did that simple act inspire millions?
Why is it still discussed today?
Questions like these stretch our thinking far beyond remembering a date.
I noticed the same thing while learning programming.
In some colleges, students were expected to write complete C programs on paper.
Syntax.
Semicolons.
Brackets.
Everything from memory.
Programming was evaluated almost like poetry.
But programming was never meant to be memorised.
It was meant to be built.
Tested.
Broken.
Debugged.
Improved.
No software engineer writes perfect code without running it.
The learning is in the logic.
Not in remembering every semicolon.
The calculator never made us worse at mathematics.
It allowed us to solve bigger mathematical problems.
Search engines never made us less knowledgeable.
They simply expanded what we could explore.
Technology has always extended human capability.
Not replaced it.
Maybe the brain was never designed to become a hard disk.
Maybe it was designed to become a workshop.
A place where ideas meet.
Where questions collide.
Where meaning is created.
Facts are the raw materials.
Thinking is the craft.
This doesn’t mean memory isn’t important.
Foundational knowledge matters.
Context matters.
We need facts to build mental models.
But when memorisation becomes our primary measure of intelligence, we begin underusing the very organ capable of changing the world.
Looking back now, I don’t think my inability to memorise everything was entirely a weakness.
It quietly pushed me towards understanding.
Towards asking questions before accepting answers.
Perhaps education shouldn’t ask us only what happened.
Perhaps it should spend a little more time asking why it mattered.
Maybe the human brain was never created to memorise.
Maybe it was created to understand.
And there is a beautiful difference between the two.
